john mason here, corporate governance guru (NOT!!). but, i have been in business for 16 years and i have chaired government, ngo and private organisations, so i have picked up a bit along the way. but, this is a blog and it is meant to invoke communication and contribution, so if i get it wrong or you have a different slant on my view, tell me, tell everyone.
let's start from the top. on your journey to good corporate governance, you need to realise that there is no defense in ignorance on any issue. yes, any issue. the first thing you need to do is get a handle on your legal and regulatory obligations. for most of us that means; fair trading laws, corporations law and tax law. each of these government utilities have excellent web sites and will step you through what you need to know. don't think you have the time to do that sort of boring stuff, well perhaps it's time to consider whether you should go into or be in business, full stop. make the investment and you will be one of those 10% of businesses who DON'T fail in the first 2~5 years.
next issue ohs, licencing, etc.

compliance is crucial and every business needs to understand their legal obligations. our chamber has been doing a lot of work on this over the past 3 years and as well as relying on john mason's expertise, we have a fantastic legal partner in Dooley & Associates who assist us in making sure we cover all bases. they are experts in business law.
My advice: get educated or get an advisor, but don't ignore this issue!
