  1. Read "Start with Why" by Simon Sinek -invaluable...he talks about focusing on the 'why' customers should buy from you -not on the what and how we do what we do.. 
  2. Business Development is a strategy and process that needs to be 'owned' by the CEO -others can be delegated to implement-but the CEO needs to be seen to be responsible for its direction.
